NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
Ian Mcmillan
founding members of Dire Straits, bass guitarist John Illsley, will be hosting a Q&A session with former manager, Paul Cummins, looking back at the Life and Times of Dire Straits with a few of their classic hits included.
If Motown is more to your beat, don’t miss the soulful performance by one of the UK’s leading Motown tributes, Made in Motor-City who will be bringing hits by the likes of Martha Reeves, The Marvelettes and The Supremes to Penistone Paramount. To end the Paramount performances on a high (note), Millhouse Green Male Voice Choir will be pairing up with Old Silkstone Brass Band for their annual celebrity concert. At Penistone Library, there will be many free workshops taking place throughout the week including sewing, philosophy and writing. Local creatives will also be giving talks and demonstrations such as author Jackie Creek and illustrator Gillian Tyler. The villages surrounding
Penistone will also be heavily involved, hosting their own arts- based events and performances for people of all ages to get involved with.
Children from Thurgoland Primary School will be having an art exhibition at St Leonard’s
Church, Wortley which includes a prize giving ceremony. Silkstone’s first family of folk music, The Deightons, will be making a date at All Saints’ Church, Silkstone. And Sheffield-based Ensemble 360 will be giving a classical chamber concert at Wortley Hall.
Thanks to its connection to the pre-Raphaelite art movement, St John the Evangelist Church, Hoylandswaine, will also be one of the mainstay venues throughout the arts week. Experience the art of clog making with Simon Brock, take part in a sketching workshop, or listen to the traditional sounds of local classical singers and musicians at the popular Sundays at 4.
And don’t forget to take interest in the Roddam Trail to find out more about the history, connections and mysteries surrounding John Roddam Spencer Stanhope – the pre- Raphaelite artist who once lived at Cannon Hall – and his work in the local area including the rare mural at Hoylandswaine Church.
