NEW YEAR, NEW YOU Back to the Classroom with Mexborough Business & Training Centre
If you’re currently unemployed and living within the Dearne Valley area, you could get sufficient help and support in getting back into work thanks to Mexborough Business Centre.
Having transformed the former grammar school into a thriving business centre, the Mexborough Business Centre team also works in partnership with various training providers to offer skills and education to increase employment figures across the area.
Based at their second site, Mexborough Resource Centre on Dolcliffe Road, just down the hill from the old school, courses are provided by the likes of Free2Learn and Portland Training in areas such as first aid, construction, and health and social care.
‘‘Many of the courses include a four-week pre-employment scheme which includes help and advice with CV writing, job applications and interview skills as well as health and safety in the workplace.’’
People in receipt of Universal Credit may be eligible for free training to provide them with the vital skills and confidence needed to get back into paid work again.
Many of the courses include a four-week pre-employment scheme which includes help and advice with CV writing, job applications and interview skills as well as health and safety in the workplace.
This will then be followed by specific industry training, which may range from one day to two weeks, where employers may also be around to explain the certain roles available on completion. For those who do pass, some courses will help with applications for any permits needed for work, such as the Security and SIA course run by Free2Learn who pay for the mandatory Security Industry Authority license needed – £210 per person for three years.
Having this license and the training gained on the course means people can go on to find work in event stewarding, CCTV monitoring and
personal protection or door security. Other courses include forklift truck training and handling for warehouse operatives, personal track safety for railway workers, or CSCS training to gain the necessary card to work on construction sites – again, all free for people unemployed and claiming certain benefits. All of the courses are open to anyone over 18, with men and women both encouraged to apply. Experience is not necessary but an initial assessment of English and Maths skills will be given, with extra training offered to those who may not meet the requirements. While it may be some years since you last stepped foot inside a school, there is no reason to fear heading back to the classroom. Most courses are made up of no more than 20 people; all of whom are in the same boat looking to get back into work.
If you’re looking to make a change for 2020, Mexborough Business Centre can help you get back on track.
