Exposing Barnsley’s beauty

Cameras at the ready – could you capture our Beautiful Barnsley for a chance to be exhibited amongst some of the world’s finest garden photographers?

To celebrate the arrival of the coveted International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition at Cannon Hall this summer, Barnsley Museums is launching a free competition to find the best snapshot of Barnsley’s botanical beauty. Focusing on the great outdoors and greenery our town has to offer, ‘Beautiful Barnsley’ is open to adults across South Yorkshire to submit their favourite images that they have taken of the Barnsley landscape. From the Trans-Pennine Trail to Wentworth Castle Gardens, there is plenty of stunning scenery to explore.

This could be the gnarly branches of the trees that surround Worsbrough country lake; the pristinely manicured flower beds and shrubbery outside the iconic town hall; the sweeping grounds of Cannon Hall’s vast parklands; or even your own

back garden.

Whether you’re a homegrown hobby photographer or have a career firmly rooted behind the camera, the competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers who use all types of equipment from phone cameras to DSLRs and even traditional film cameras. Images can depict any of the four seasons and can be composed in any way, from detailed macros, to obscure abstract images or wide- angled landscapes. You can take images specifically for the competition or use archive material that you photographed years ago. So long as your images meet the minimum size guidelines, the only other rule is that all images submitted must showcase the green spaces and biodiversity found within the Barnsley boundary.

But you need to be quick as a flash. Entry closes at 12pm on Wednesday 22nd April and all submissions will then be judged by the IGPOTY team and Kyte Photography.

There are many prizes up for grabs, with the top 20 entries going on display at the indoor exhibition at Cannon Hall which will run from September 2020 until February 2021. First place prize will also have their winning image on display at Wentworth Castle Gardens and receive a behind-the-scenes day at the National Trust site with cream tea and lunch, plus the IGPOTY book of the 13th competition winners.

This is the first year the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition has travelled to Barnsley and Cannon Hall will be proud to welcome the touring exhibition to its grounds when it arrives in August.

What started as a small competition back in 2007 by a group of professional garden photographers quickly grew to become the world’s premier photography competition focusing on garden, plant, flower and botanical photography. The competition is supported by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew which is where the winning images from the 13th competition will be announced in February. The touring exhibition will then be rolled out across the UK at gardens and stately homes. Cannon Hall is one of many UK sites the tour will visit which includes National Trust Dyffryn Gardens in Wales, Blenheim Palace, and Blarney Castle in Ireland. From Friday 28th August until Thursday 22nd

October, the grounds of Cannon Hall will be home to large outdoor versions of the winning images from 2019’s competition which will be displayed throughout the parklands.

The IGPOTY competition comprises of nine categories and four photo projects so there will be some fantastic pieces available to marvel at.
