Councillor update

May we both take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

It’s hard to believe it is 20 years since the millennial celebrations. For us the year ahead will be full of challenges, not least of which is the setting of BCP Council’s budget. Work has been ongoing since last April when the new Council came into existence. By law, the Council must set a balanced budget, by no means an easy task. Continued government cuts to the Council’s main grant, together with pressures from an ageing population and growing issues with children’s social care, created a funding gap of £15 million. Suffi cient savings have been identifi ed to enable a balanced budget to be set, but despite the claims that austerity is over, the legacy of such a programme will continue for several more years yet.

We were unable to provide an update last month because of the General Election. The period between the announcement of the election and the election itself is referred to as Purdah. During this time council offi cers must be politically impartial and refrain from making announcements about any new or controversial initiatives that could be seen to be advantageous to any candidates or parties in the forthcoming election. Councillors are also subject to these rules, hence the absence of our usual article. However, this doesn’t mean we have been inactive during the last six weeks. We have still attended our regular committee meetings, discussed planning applications with case offi cers, reported blocked gulleys and potholes, argued for modifi cations to the Dunyeats Road scheme following the fi nal safety audit and supported local community activities.

Once again, the Christmas lights switch on was a great success and our sincere thanks go to

all involved in making the event a joyous family occasion. Not only that, but Broadstone has once again looked a picture during the dark, wet evenings in the run up to Christmas.

We were pleased to be able to take part in the 50th Broadstone Christmas Parade – Vikki with the Youth Club and Mike with the Methodist Church. Once again, the weather was kind, the number of spectators was extremely high and the parade itself was as colourful and entertaining

as ever. It was great to see so many voluntary groups and organisations

taking part, a real refl ection of the strength of Broadstone’s community spirit.

As usual, we will be holding our regular surgery in Broadstone Library on the fi rst Saturday of the month, in this case 4th January, starting at 10am.
