School’s community project in Costa Rica
In the summer of 2021, a group of boys from Years 9, 10 and 11 at Poole Grammar School are going on a four week expedition to Costa Rica, organised through the school and Camps International, a not- for-profi t organisation.
Whilst there they will spend time working on community projects, carry out conservation work, take part in marine conservation and have the opportunity to gain scuba diving qualifi cations.
The objectives of the expedition are to undertake projects in order to raise the educational and living standards of developing communities within a rural district of Costa Rica and to assist with ongoing wildlife conservation programmes to preserve biodiversity and protect vulnerable habitats.
Two of the boys have contacted the Link magazines and asked us to publicise their fundraising plans to support their expedition...
My name is Louis, I am a student at Poole Grammar School and I live in Broadstone. I am also an active member of Broadstone Cricket Club.
This expedition is extremely important to me because I feel that it is important to understand
that there are many places in the world that don’t have what I have in the comfort of my community and home life. In addition, it is also important to be protecting our world and saving the environment. I for one, don’t want my children or my children’s children to grow up in a world without rainforests and exotic wildlife that provide the world with a sense of biodiversity, life and colour.
The cost of this expedition is being wholly fundraised by me as an individual and I will be raising £4,570 over the course of just under two years. Therefore, I have come up with the idea of selling 2020 calendars to raise some money for me to go on this trip. The theme of these
calendars are pictures of old Broadstone.
If you would like to purchase one of these wonderful calendars and support my fundraising for Costa Rica, they are priced at £10 per calendar. Twelve of the local businesses along the Broadway have kindly agreed to sponsor a month each and are selling it in-store now or visit:

Hi, I’m Daniel! I’m 13 and in Year 9 at Poole Grammar School. I live in Corfe Mullen with my family. I love football and play in goal for Broadstone FC under 14s. I also like Formula 1 racing and model railways. I hope to be an engineer when I’m older, ideally working for an F1 team!
I’m already excited and nervous about the trip. I’m
sure it will be an amazing experience and will help me build my confi dence, learn about new places and cultures, help people less fortunate than me and help do my bit to protect the planet.
The whole cost of my trip will be £4,500, so my friends and family are helping me fundraise and come up with good ideas. These include selling online; making sweet cones and ribbon star ornaments to sell at craft fairs; and running a penalty shoot-out/beat the keeper competition at local events. But with such a tough target to hit I could do with more help please…
I’m hoping that there are a few ways that you might be able to help me:
• Shirt sponsorship: pay me to wear your logo on my ‘Camps International’ shirt whenever I am out fundraising. I could also add your logo to a banner to display at fundraising events and mention you lots on my Facebook page too!
