Book an eye test

As we are inundated with all the ‘New Year... New You’ health campaigns, give a thought to probably the most precious of your senses... your sight.

There are no drastic changes needed to give your eyes the best chance of great vision through the years. There are no gym classes or extreme diets needed... just a little TLC.

Firstly eat a good diet rich in green vegetables for zinc, nuts and sunfl ower seeds for general eye health and eggs for lutein and vitamin A. Eat a variety of colours when it comes to fruit and vegetables to maximize your vitamins and aim for a least two portions of fi sh a week.

If you fi nd you are getting eyestrain or headaches or blurring of your vision when driving or reading, get your eyes checked by an optician. Don’t wait for a reminder that your next eye test is due if you have any symptoms like watery eyes or you are concerned about anything. Any changes in your eyes or vision are best identifi ed early, so any necessary treatment or update to your glasses or contact lenses can be completed early on.

With the advances in contact lens materials, the drier atmospheres and central heating need not be a problem. There are glasses lenses designed

specifi cally to help with the glare of night driving. These lenses have a special contrast enhancing fi lter and can help not only in the dark, but in foggy conditions too. There are lenses designed to give you a greater range for all your electronic work and hobbies. Isn’t it annoying when you can read a book with your glasses but can’t see the PC screen or a recipe book on the worktop without leaning in closer to read it? These lenses are not as complex as varifocals and can make your vision feel as good as it did fi ve years ago.

So you can make an easy positive change now before the New Year – have an eye test.
