Dan back under

Where to start? Six years on from the ‘Dan Under’ series published in this magazine in 2012/13 and I fi nd myself back in Oz, project managing an exciting new start-up. But how did I fi nd myself back here? Let’s rewind back to 2014...

For those who might recall, my previous ‘Dan Under’ outlined my travels here in Australia after leaving Broadstone with a one-way ticket at 19 years old. Following my departure of Australia in September 2014, my endeavours have led me far and wide and I’ve since ticked off nearly 60 different countries and fi ve continents.

My partner (the Swede I picked up in Oz and have since been stuck with) and I have spent our Christmases in a classic Moroccan mud-house in a Sahara Oasis, travelled through some of the murder capital cities of the world in Honduras and have road tripped across the States. Work to fund my addiction to travel has included (but most certainly not been limited to); building a house with a close-friend in Broadstone during a nine months stint back home, managing a café in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark, and since arriving back in Australia in 2017, I have fully qualifi ed as a Civil Engineering Associate and now work as a project manager for a local two-man band environmental and town planning consultancy on the beach.

In November, I was fortunate enough to host the legend himself, Paul Foreman, the co-founder of The Broadstone Link and husband of the wonderful founder, Karen Foreman, for a short but sweet four night stay here in my (new) hometown of Coolangatta, Queensland. After offering me the chance to publish a one-off trilogy of ‘Dan Back Under’, I was delighted to take the opportunity to reach out to all of those who are interested and would like an insight into my life on the other-side.

Never have I been one for comfort, nor have I been one for a 9-5, so continually pushing my boundaries, meeting new people and absorbing

apartment and working part-time for two years, the studying fi nally came to an end in November. Somehow, during that period I

have landed on my feet

with some incredible friends here in Australia and an exciting role with work, where I am now responsible to get one of Australia’s fi rst outdoor glamping villages – The Hideaway Cabarita Beach, off its feet from scratch before moving onto other new thrilling projects early next year.

Pick up the next issue to fi nd out more. If you have any questions, wish for travel advice and or would like to just reach out, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks guys! Talk next month.

new cultures has ultimately ended me back in the country I favoured the most from my travels.

After investing all I had (and more) to study full- time at TAFE Queensland in Brisbane, which meant enduring 17-hour days with a two-hour commute (one-way) to and from my beachside
