Volunteers to help bereaved relatives

New service sees volunteers helping bereaved relatives at Inquests.

Going to an Inquest and

being told about the last moments of your loved one’s life can be a hard day for anyone to have to go through, but having someone there to help can make the process far less traumatic.

Dorset Coroner’s Court in Bournemouth is now setting up a Support Service which will be run by volunteers from the Coroners’ Court Support Service (CCSS). The CCSS is a charity that started in 2003 and their volunteers will be there to listen and offer emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending an Inquest at Bournemouth.

Mrs Rachael C Griffi n, HM Senior Coroner for Dorset, said: “We are looking forward to working with the volunteers from the Coroners Court Support Service who will offer invaluable support to all those who attend Inquest hearings, especially the bereaved family and friends. The volunteers will provide guidance and help to those who need it at the diffi cult time following the loss of their loved one.”

Beverley Radcliffe, Director of the CCSS, said:

“Each person is affected by bereavement in their own individual way and, as a volunteer, you really have to quickly assess what their needs are and respond to them.

The fi rst time you have to go into a Courtroom can be very daunting, let alone if it is something as distressing as an Inquest. It is really important that bereaved family members feel they have taken part in the proceedings rather than it happening around them, as this is their opportunity to fi nd the answers they might need in determining what happened when their loved one died.”

Volunteers are now being recruited for the Dorset Courts and anyone interested should apply for an application pack emailing info@ccsupport.org.uk or calling 07534 149962. Applications will open from February and interviews will be held in February and March. Three consecutive days of training will be confi rmed in April/May.

CCSS Helpline: If you would like to talk to a volunteer before the day of the Inquest call 0300 1112141, Mon-Fri 9am-7pm and Saturday 9am- 2pm or e-mail helpline@ccss.org.uk. If you wish to learn more about the work of the CCSS or wish to make a donation to this charity, visit: www. coronerscourtssupportservice.org.uk
