MADE IN THE EAST MIDLANDS

Impacting the social fabric of the East Midlands

By Mo Suleman (pictured), Director of Resources, Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Derby Museum and Art Gallery was established in 1879 following a generous donation by local philanthropist Michael Bass. The museums expanded in the 1970s and 1980s, following the addition of the Silk Mill Museum and Pickford’s House Museum to its portfolio of venues. The museums were run by Derby City Council until 2012

when a decision was taken to create a charitable trust to manage them. Derby Museums is an entrepreneurial, opportunistic organisation with a deep sense of social purpose, which has an increasing impact on the economy and communities in the East Midlands. Operating under a trust was not easy, a number of chief

executives and finance directors came and went until they were stabilised by the current team. A culture of calculated risk was encouraged and this enabled the museums to break the shackles of the past and seek to make the

museum relevant for its audiences and be right at the heart of its community. Derby Museums is asset-based and human-centred. This

means it mobilises its audiences and volunteers to create new stories and programmes based on collections of cultural heritage assets. For example, over 1,300 volunteers have contributed to the new Museum of Making Development at Derby Silk Mill. This Human-centred design approach principle, common in commercial product design, leads to a more meaningful experience for the visitor and greater ownership by the community.
