Commitment to housing sector earns Chief Executive top award

emh group’s Chief Executive has been awarded a national award, recognising his commitment to the housing sector and the eradication of homelessness in the region. Chan Kataria OBE has headed up

the Leicestershire-based 20,000- home organisation for 15 years, growing it from a £19m organisation to one with a £103m turnover. As a not-for-profit association, this growth has enabled the group to secure a position as one of Homes England’s first strategic partners – the only one in the East Midlands in the first wave. This has doubled the output of new homes. Recently Chan beat off nine other

shortlisted candidates to be named Chief Executive of the Year by leading sector magazine 24housing. The awards were founded in 2013 to celebrate the very best that the housing sector has to offer. The panel of judges recognised

Chan’s role in leading emh group’s commitment to ending homelessness, supporting research with a university to map street homelessness, leading Leicester’s first Housing First Pilot to help rough sleepers and funding a joint project with the NHF on ‘Hacking Homelessness’. Chan is also an ardent and

effective champion for diversity and inclusion – leading by example to promote greater equality as a sector spokesperson and organising a number of events this year to raise the importance of diversity and solutions to inequality. In addition, he mentors other

senior executives and holds board roles at a hospice, FE college, CBI, and for the CIH and NHF. Professor David Russell, Chair of

emh group, said: “We are delighted that Chan’s contribution to emh

group and the region has been recognised in this way. He works tirelessly to reduce homelessness and has grown emh group to a significant, efficient organisation which as a result is able to deliver

many more homes to meet an urgent local need. “His true humanitarian approach

inspires others and touches every aspect of the group; from our award-winning extra care scheme,

Chan Kataria has been recognised for his contribution to business and society

our pledge to offer 250 apprenticeships within five years, our delivery of Europe’s largest Passivhaus scheme, and our efforts to help residents move out of fuel poverty. Congratulations Chan.”
