THE FIRST WORD

Welcome to the double-edition December/January Business Network – the final publication of 2019. Fittingly, we end with another bumper 100-page magazine. The theme of this edition is Recruitment, a key area which affects the vast majority

of businesses – irrespective of size or sector. The way we work, the shifting priorities of businesses, what employees – or

potential employees – are looking for in a role, external factors such as skills gaps and technological advances – all of these attributes and more are contributing to an ever- changing and more complex recruiting environment. With the costs of getting recruitment wrong well publicised and, conversely, the positive effect of recruiting an engaged, talented employee in sync with a company’s values obvious, it goes without saying that the recruitment process can be make or break for a business. In this edition we hear from a multitude of recruitment specialists, not least Chamber patrons Eileen Richards Recruitment and SF Recruitment; both of whom offer interesting and important insights into the world of recruitment through this edition’s focus feature and big interview respectively. There are also features centred on the theme of ‘Made in the East Midlands’ as we

take a look at, and celebrate, some of the ways we as a region maintain our renowned reputation for making things and taking what we make across the region, the nation and indeed the world. While print deadlines mean we’re limited as to what we can include regarding the

recent general election, there’s nevertheless a feature included which identifies the Chamber's key asks of an incoming Government. Finally, I would like to thank every member which has advertised and/or provided

content for Business Network in 2019. We’re pleased to be able to provide this publication to you, our members, ten times per year and this would clearly not be possible without your support.

Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
