LAMMA preview

Right bait essential to combat rodents A

new rodenticide known as Storm Ultra Secure will be exhibited at

LAMMA by agrochemical giant BASF.

The product contains 25 parts per million (ppm) of the active substance fl ocoumafen and is a wax free formulation which makes it more palatable to ro- dents. It will be available in a va- riety of pack sizes to profession- al users and farmers as well as to the general public.

Rodents consume and spoil

stored produce, spread disease to humans and livestock, attack growing crops and damage build- ings. It is therefore essential for farmers to fi nd the right bait that has high effi cacy and palatabili- ty, says the company.

“Since second generation ro- denticides were released in the 1970s and 1980s to combat ro- dent resistance to the early an- ticoagulants of the 1950s, a com-

placency about rodent control has developed,” says BASF glob- al technical marketing manager Sharon Hughes.

“It is believed that all sec- ond-generation actives have a high rate of effi cacy and that ro- dents have little to no resistance to them. However, this is not the case because rats have already shown resistance to difenacoum and bromadiolone.”

Resistance is only one factor in the effi cacy of a rodenti- cide, says Ms Hughes. Palatabili- ty is an equally important consid- eration, she adds. The strength of the active is irrelevant if the ro- dent is not attracted to eat the product.

This means it is important to have an active ingredients that rodents are not resistant to – and a product that is highly palata- ble to ensure a suffi cient quanti- ty of the same active ingredient is consumed.

The new bait is effective and highly palatable to rodents.
