Politicians must recognise importance of farming
I
t’s often said that politicians only care about what we think when they want our vote. Only when there is an election do they come knock-
ing on our door, eager to listen to our concerns and pledging to improve our livelihoods. The run-up to this month’s general election has
been no exception – not least because the country is so divided. Would-be MPs are bending over back- wards to woo voters in the hope of securing a seat in the House of Commons. With little more than 1% of the population employed in agriculture, it would be easy to be- lieve that the farming vote doesn’t matter. But this would be a mistake. Politicians do listen to farm- ers – and it is important that we get the farming message across.
Agriculture features in all the manifestos of the main political parties. And politicians regularly engage with the farming sector, perhaps more so than they do with many other industries. But the promises they have made all fall short of an ambi- tious vision for the sector. The Conservatives want to shift farm support to environmental measures. Labour is understand- ably more focused on looking after farm workers.

The Lib Dems want to reduce support for larger farms and the Greens want to tax meat consump- tion while halving pesticide usage. No surprises there. It is clear that our political parties are playing to their respective audiences rather than viewing agriculture as a fundamental part of the economy – and the bedrock of our coun- tryside and rural environment. Farming organisations are lobbying hard to
change this – emphasising the need to recognise the value of safe, traceable and affordable British food, as well as the industry’s wider role in helping to tackle big issues like climate change. It is important that we all play our part too – and not just by voting for our preferred candidate on 12 December. It is vital we continue to hold our politicians to account long after the election – not just when they knock on our door.
Only if politicians are made to recognise the im- portance of agriculture will the sector be seen for what it is: a major contributor to the life, health and wealth of the nation. Happy Christmas – and all the best for 2020.
