Herbicide resistance means more growers are interested in inter-row cultivators

Camera guidance means it is now possible to cover decent acreages quickly

the job in hand – A-shares mount- ed on S-tines for deeper work or duckfoot shares and L-blades mounted on the specially designed Hatzenbicher Vibro-tine. Camera-controlled row guid- ance is provided by a special head- stock which has an integrated hydraulic ram to provide up to 250mm of side-shift in either di- rection. Oil is sent either left or right by the camera controller, en- suring tines run close to the crop rows without hooking out plants. While the heavy metal is made

in Austria, the clever technology comes from a small specialist fi rm in Bedfordshire – Tillet and Hague. The company has been de- veloping camera guidance sys- tems since 1995 and supplies dif- ferent systems to manufacturers all over the world.

The set-up has two advantag-

es. First, it takes a feed from two or more cameras so it is more ac- curate, particularly at row ends and where there are drill miss- es or overlaps. Secondly, the soft- ware derives a speed measure-

ment from the camera so it is not dependent on GPS or radar. To bring an extra level of pre-

cision there’s also the option of sprayer-style GPS section con- trol. With individual hydraulic rams on each parallelogram link- age, the Muller Isobus controller is able to lift individual row units as they reach previously cultivat- ed ground.

Big benefits

This is a particular benefi t when working in fi elds with angled headlands – the system is able to detect when the hoe shares are reaching the end of the run and automatically lift them out of work to avoid hooking out plants on the cross-drilled headland bouts. “While inter-row cultivators provide the best means of chem- ical-free weed control in well-es- tablished row crops, comb harrows are an essential tool in battling weeds where the crop is not as well developed and where row-spac- ings don’t allow,” says Mr Woolway. With working widths stretch- ing to 27m, the Hatzenbichler range enables growers to cover decent daily acreages with min- imal wheelings. The full Hatzen- bichler range of inter-row cultiva- tors and comb harrows will be at LAMMA in Hall 6, stand 6.230.
