Our hometown of Nashville, Tennessee is most famously known as “Music City”, and has become a remarkably busy tourist destination on that account. A visitor would be forgiven for thinking that everyone here must be a musician, or at least work in the music business, but there are a lot of other industries here that actually pay the bills. Construction is one of them – and that is also pretty
obvious to any visitor. Te Nashville Business Journal tracks ongoing projects, and reports that in October there were
34 tower cranes on building sites here – exceeding the count in larger cities such as Washington, DC or Denver. With that background, we visit Cumberland Sales Company in this issue, a local business whose heritage is closely linked to this publication. Pat Poe, long-time owner of CSC, started what grew into this publication in 1984 as a way to promote the sale of some aged inventory he had in stock. Matt Cheek, who has now operated Cumberland Sales since 2016, shares the unexpected path he followed to get here. He outlines the foundational elements of the business that he learned from Poe, and the things he’s doing to leverage those strengths for the future. In our Spotlight, we check in with Tandemloc. Tis leading manufacturer of spreader beams operates out of a facility in eastern North Carolina that exceeds 100,000 square feet. Versatility is a key consideration for their product strategy, and they stock an exceptionally broad range of lifting products in addition to having the ability to custom-engineer solutions to more complex challenges. You’ll also find an expended “Rigger’s Corner” as a special item for this issue. Hercules SLR (securing, lifting, rigging) shares their perspective on rigging – defining it as the business of saving lives. With a national scope of operation across Canada, their trainers and inspectors have opportunities to see the gear they supply put to work in an astonishing range of applications. And as we prepare for the new year, we also take a look ahead at the conferences and exhibitions relevant to our industry in 2020. We focus first on those events specifically tailored to wire rope, rigging and synthetic lifting products, as well as safety and training for lifting professionals. We also review a selection of larger events where lifting and rigging are not the primary focus but have a substantial role. We hope to see you at many of these events in 2020.
