NEW OWNER, NEW ERA: THE NEXT CHAPTER FOR
CUMBERLAND SALES COMPANY
ARTICLE BY: ANASTASIA SASEWICH
Matt Cheek never thought he’d one day own and operate a long-standing and successful wire rope supply company. What began in early 1998 as a part-time job running wire rope reels and cutting chain during his college years at Belmont University eventually grew into a full-time role for Cheek—who is now the owner and director of Cumberland Sales Company (CSC), a wire rope and industrial hardware supplier located in Nashville, Tennessee.
Our readers should be familiar with CSC, which was founded by, owned, and run by Pat Poe since its inception in 1976. Although now separately owned, he also founded this publication in 1984 as a simple mailing list of his extra stock for sale, which he and later his daughter Melissa evolved to become the magazine you’re reading now. It was Poe who asked Cheek to come on board as a full-time salesperson after Cheek’s post-college return to Nashville, where he was intending to start a music management career. “I figured I would just work in sales for a while— while still working on my music,” Cheek said. “However, sales just came so naturally to me. I went from doing ninety thousand dollars in sales during my first year to nearly six hundred thousand in my second. After that, I decided pretty quickly to pursue that course of action, and I’ve never looked back.” After the first two years working for Poe and
CSC, Poe proposed that Cheek take over. Tey began negotiations and Cheek officially took ownership in August of 2016.
