EVOLUTION AND GROWTH Under Poe’s leadership and direction, CSC earned a reputation as a reliable source of wire rope and industrial supplies sold by a highly knowledgeable and customer- service-oriented team. Cheek has taken care to protect that operational benchmark and looks forward to a successful future for the company, one marked by evolution and growth. “It’s a work in progress for me, like anything in life,” he noted. “But the most important thing I’ve focused on in the process of taking ownership of CSC is to maintain and nurture the relationships we’ve built over the last forty-plus years.”


Cheek added that it ultimately comes down to people for him. “In the beginning, when I started out, and even when I took over as owner, I really had no clue. I just felt strongly that if I put the key people in place and kept an eye toward the future, that would be a good place to start. It’s served me more than well.”


Cheek was quick to note that Poe has been extremely helpful in guiding him as he steers CSC into the next phase of its trajectory. “Pat really knew every single inch of what he owned


and sold,” Cheek said. “It was amazing to me then and is even more amazing to me now that I’m at the helm. It’s certainly been a learning curve—sometimes he comes by the warehouse and has a few ‘pointers’ for me. But at the end of the day, I employ a great deal of strategies for running this business that I learned directly from him.” It helped that Cheek and Poe had some similarities


from the start.

- MATT CHEEK. “We’re both natural salesmen, and he and I both


know how to always make the customer feel taken care of, regardless of the other variables in play. Whether they’re spending ten dollars or two hundred thousand, they get taken care of the same way.” It’s just one example of the strategies Poe passed on to Cheek. “I’m lucky to have had Pat to show me the ropes, and I take what I’ve learned with me as I move forward,” he said.


LOOK AND FEEL Tere’s much to apply that acquired knowledge to, from the selling side of the business to marketing CSC itself. In fact, one important and exciting thing Cheek said he’s working on now is the CSC brand and logo. “I won’t say too much at this juncture, but I can tell


you it’s definitely a focus right now. Pushing the online business into new, different avenues has so far proved a worthwhile initiative, one we will continue to prioritize going forward. And the look, feel, and experience of the Cumberland Sales brand is one we are thinking hard about right now.” It’s a path that more than one organization in the


wire rope supply industry seems to be following, but one Cheek feels is worthwhile.
