APRIL 2019 THE RIDER/ 9 INSIDE The Pioneers Of Rodeo Ken Doner - “Cowboy” 1957-2018

By George Hewitt I Remember “Kenny” In every one’s life there

are certain occasions, people and or events, that are spe- cial. Every once in a while someone comes your way so bright with talent, ability, dedication and compassion that it will make an impres- sion on you that you will re- member forever. This describes the very

young, very eager Kenny Doner. Born to a Rodeo family in 1957, the year the Ontario Rodeo Association was formed, surrounded by everything western that con-

sisted of his four Rodeo brothers - Gary, Brian, Wayne, Davey, his sainted mother Shirley and of course, the ultimate all around cowboy, father Doug Doner, the Patriarch of what had become the legendary first family of Rodeo in On- tario.

In the early days of On-

tario Rodeo most of us of that time had very little idea of Rodeo - the events, the dangers of life within that rodeo arena, where you enter into a world of inde- scribable dangers faced competing in this, without question, the most danger- ous sport in the world.

The Doner family was

not your average family. Guided and nurtured by both mother, father and brothers, Kenny was an eager student. Without ques- tion Kenny Doner, as my friend, will always be re- membered as a caring, giv- ing, talented Cowboy who helped many youngsters and or “oldsters” who were try- ing to earn their spurs in the Rodeo Arena. My memories of

Kenny are many. One time stands out in my mind that clearly demonstrates how a real Rodeo cowboy sacri- fices everyday to assure hu- mane treatment in caring for and managing of our animal partners of Rodeo. Without cowboys they would have been destroyed long ago as useless outlaw animals by most others than the cow- boy.

As my thoughts re-

turned to present 1980’s, I had just pulled up to the Windsor Arena where the Rodeo was to take place the

next day. Kenny was feed- ing the Rodeo stock. During our welcome exchange I discovered that Kenny had not eaten in two days as the Rodeo Owner had not paid Kenny or anyone else that was working for him for more than three weeks. There he was feeding the stock, not thinking about his own hunger pains. Your right thinking “what a man”. This story was the real life Kenny Doner.” Kenny Doner. He was

my friend, a giver not a taker. And YEH! We sure got him something to eat. I could talk on for hours talk- ing about Kenny Doner. I will retain those memories for ever. Kenny’s life and the way he lived it is a testi- monial of all that is good about Rodeo, the cowboy and the entire legendary Doner Family— especially a man I truly admired: Kenny Doner. He will be missed.
