56/ APRIL 2019 THE RIDER REAL ESTATE: In this age of do it yourself I

believe the majority of us fail to appreciate the time spent by someone in becoming an expert, an authority, a more educated or licensed professional in many ca- reers.

In my own profession I have

people ask me all the time to tell them what their home is worth , outside of business relationships. It could be at a party, over the in- ternet , by text and especially these days on social media.

A Realtor’s Worth Usually they don’t want to

sell but are just wondering what their property is worth. While I understand the con-

cept that Realtors know the price of someones property just off the top of their heads the opposite is true. Our market changes con- stantly. In order to give an accu- rate opinion of value it will take a professional Realtor hours to de- rive the best price for your home. When you ask a Realtor for a price over the phone or on Face-

book you are asking them to put themselves in a position of liabil- ity and asking for them to give to you , for free, the expertise of their years of experience, the dozens of books they’ve read on their profession, the thousands of hours they’ve spent perfecting their research skills, the money they’ve paid out to experts they have studied under and seminars they have attended, various train- ing certifications, degrees, confer- ences and continual education.

The years they’ve spent in practical ap- plication, and the work they have put into marketing, video’s, office rental, staff salaries, phone systems, even just the gasoline costs driving clients around. The majority of us have years spent practicing our drafting of con- tract skills, negotiating skills and our adhering to our legal principals and li- censing bodies. I had someone just recently contact me

through private messaging on Face- book. I don’t know this person but they thought nothing of describing their property in depth, including outbuild- ings, work they have done, size of property ..you get the picture..qualified they weren’t selling , just wanting to know what their home was worth so they could plan for the future. Imagine if I private messaged one of our cities top lawyers , tell him all about some complicated legal issue I was having, describing it in detail and then asking for his legal opinion on my case, for free, over Facebook.. Realtors are professionals. We are

licensed, hardworking and deserve to be paid for our skills. We are people with families and have worked long and hard to become good at our jobs. We are marketing experts, have

legal knowledge of the contracts we prepare to sell homes, offer long hour service to our clients and are account- able to our licensing body. We are risk takers in the sense that we list your homes, promote them all at our own expense and bring our experience to the table in hopes to earn a commis- sion. Not all listings sell and the work we do on those is the same as the ones we do earn a commission for. Last week I sold two Private for

Sale properties and charged each seller a commission which they paid. They’d had no luck in either situation with sell- ing their homes on their own in a mar- ket where things were selling overnight.. Most of the Buyers I deal with
