The Silver Spur Saddle Club Celebrates 50 Years!
| The Silver Spur Saddle Club is a family oriented
horseback riding club that welcomes all levels of riding ex- perience and ages to participate. Since the club was founded in 1969, it has always strived to integrate itself within the local equine community. The Silver Spur Saddle Club is lo- cated in Tara, Ontario and has many local equestrians from Grey and Bruce County competing at shows and participat- ing in events. The Silver Spur Saddle Club hosts monthly shows
from June and September alongside fun and educational events for members to get more involved with the club, their community, and their horses. This year the club is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary.
The club started in 1969 and was originally called The Sil- ver Cowboys. It changed to Silver Spur Saddle Club as the ladies became involved in the club and took a little offence to the original name. The first show in 1969 was held in an empty field near
Stone Tree Golf Course outside of Owen Sound. The second show in 1970 was held at Rock Springs Camp, just east of the Owen Sound hospital., owned by Jake and Jean Tim- merman. It’s now known as the KOA camp. In 1975 the shows moved to the farm of Bill and
Joanne Cowper near Woodford, Ontario. The club shows were held at the Cowper farm for 39 years. A past competitor has been quoted as saying that in
the early years there weren’t a lot of families with horse trailers and a lot of the horses came in cattle trucks. There were chutes that trucks backed up to to get the horses on and off the trucks. In 2015 the club shows moved to a bigger location at the fair grounds in Tara, Ontario. The club was and still is run solely on volunteers and
donations. This community oriented horseback riding club welcomes all levels of riding experience and ages to partic- ipate.
Over the years a lot of well known locals were in-
volved with the club: Harold Hoy, Bill Murdoch, Cam Mill- man, Melanie Gray, Williard and Joan Lee and Ellen O’Reilly. Shows in 2019 will be held on the following dates:

Two Saddle Clubs join together to make one Strong Niagara Saddle Club
On February 10, 2019 the general membership of Port Col- borne Saddle Club held their Annual General Meeting The Main topic on the agenda was to vote on a motion pre-
sented to the board of Directors in the fall of 2018 to merge with Bertie Willloughby Saddle Club, after a 3 month study by a committee put in place by the 2018 president a recommen- dation was presented to the PCSC board of directors to move forth with the merge. So the motion was brought forward to the general mem-
bership to vote on. After some discussion it was a unanimous vote by the members to merge with Bertie Willoughby Saddle Club, to form one strong Saddle Club in the Niagara Region. | Moving forward the two clubs will go under the name Port Colborne - Bertie Willoughby Saddle Club, the members elected in the board of directors for the 2019 season & booked the show dates for the 2019 season. This years show dates are May 26, June 9, June 23, July 14, July 28 and August 18 with a Raindate of August 25 The new executive is working hard to get a new website & Social media accounts in place and up and running.
