The Science History Institute, formerly known as the Chemical Heritage Foundation, in Philadelphia, PA
The second phase of the expansion project is underway and will feature upgrading the cen- ter’s two theaters that show free informative films, and the construction of a new Philadelphia-specific information desk, the installation of the “Philadelphia Welcome Wall" - a 42-foot long immersive digital experience - plus renovations to the café, public seating and vendor kiosk areas.
Philadelphia’s elevated Rail Park, located just steps from the Pennsylvania Convention Center, recently opened in the Callowhill sec- tion of the city. Built on top of the former Reading Railroad viaduct, the green space was inspired by the High Line in New York City.
The first phase of the park stretches a quarter- mile and is landscaped with dozens of trees and more than 1,000 shrubs and perennials. Views from the 25,000-square foot park include industrial buildings with architectural styles dating back to the mid-19th century, when Callowhill served as a manufacturing hub during the Industrial Revolution. The plan is to extend the park for three miles from Callowhill to Philadelphia’s Brewerytown neigh- borhood.
A municipal pier on the Delaware River water- front was transformed into a vibrant, multi- functional public community space. Cherry Street Pier is now open with a full fall schedule of events. It includes a food and beverage venue, collaborative working space, open pro- grammable space for pop-up retail markets, art installations, public events, and an open-air park and café with views of the river.
The historic Bourse, which served as an exchange building from 1891 to 1960, has turned into The Bourse Marketplace after a $22.5 million transformation. Set to be com- pleted by early 2019, its trendy food court already is open to the public. New additions include a total of 30 food tenants.
