BUSINESS
A venue that meets the grade
With its fascinating academic history, an assembly of office and work spaces, plus grade-A facilities, the answer is clear as to how Mexborough Business Centre has continued to flourish to become the area’s principal community hub.
Since taking over ownership of the former Mexborough Grammar School building in 2015, businessman Peter Newman and his team have been busy doing their homework and putting their hard work to the test to regenerate the site as a welcoming place for all. Opened in 1910 as Mexborough and District Secondary School, it became a grammar school in 1931 before closing in the 80s. Today, the site is used by a range of businesses, community groups and members of the public to host events, celebrate together, or even as a place of work.
The large, open-plan entrance hall is a blank canvas that has been used for a range of events over the
past three years. From weddings and parties to coffee mornings and craft fayres, dance presentations and awards ceremonies to corporate events and consultations; the extensive hall can cater for up to 250 people and has its own stage and bar.
One of Mexborough Grammar’s most iconic alumni is of course the Iron Man of poetry, Ted Hughes. Long before his days as the Poet Laureate who wrote about primitive pikes, roosting hawks and heavy- headed snowdrops, a young Edward James Hughes learned of his penchant for writing in the school’s library. His early works were even published in the school’s newspaper, The Don and Dearne.
Inspired by this acclaimed Thought Fox, an anthology of local literature groups continue to use Mexborough Business Centre as the prose for their meetings and performances.
Although not a son of
Mexborough by birth, having moved here aged seven in 1938 from Mytholmroyd, a local festival has been held annually for the past few years to commemorate Ted’s time in
the town. The Ted Hughes Festival celebrates arts and creativity in his name, with Mexborough Business Centre laying the stage for a variety of well-known poets and authors every year.
Run by fellow Mexborough poet, Ian Parks, the Read to Write poetry group meet at the centre every Tuesday evening where their 50 members ranging from ten to 80-years-old share their self-written poems. From September, creative writing group, Write on Mexborough, will also use the centre as a base. Sticking with the Three Rs theme of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, Doncaster’s Absolute Maths have also recently moved into the premises in a bid to continue with their online maths tuition. Tutor Dan Hathaway said the business support from Peter and the team was what added points onto their decision.
“As a new business looking to expand from home, the support and favourable terms we’ve received here have been exceptional. While the idea is to continue tutoring online for the meantime, the team has been really helpful in organising space for us to use for one-to-one lessons in the future.”
Like Absolute Maths, the tenants based at Mexborough Business Centre are overjoyed with the class service they receive.
Many have made the transition from high street premises to the quiet and peaceful surroundings of
Mexborough Business Centre due to its security, welcoming reception area and extensive parking. While others who previously worked from home have enjoyed the support and community feel of being based at the centre for an affordable monthly rate. Swapping professors for professionals, the classrooms where pupils once sat have been transformed into over 40 office and work spaces, with no two pages of the business book the same. Not just desks and whiteboards, the rooms have been individually tailored to suit a wide variety of industries including beauty rooms, consultancy space and even a makeup studio. They also offer a virtual office facility, ideal for sole traders who need a registered business address, answering service and mail handling. If you’re interested to learn more about using the facilities at Mexborough Business Centre for your next event or are looking for a new office to call home, speak to the friendly team on 01709 590005.
