Buns on the Run in Barnsley

Is there anything better than the smell of fresh-out-the-oven bread as it wafts up your nose, belly greedily rumbling at the thought of slathering butter on a warm roll or slice?

But these days, at-home bread

making seems to be a lost art or purely for the TV baking shows, with many of us resigning ourselves to the convenience of a shop-bought loaf instead. Thanks to Worsbrough Mill

and Country Park, the simple skill of bread making will be springing back into action as they prepare to host a range of free workshops in the Barnsley community with their forthcoming Buns of the Run project. After securing a £10,000 grant

from the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme, Worsbrough Mill are aiming to unite different communities together over our

favourite food staple. Following his appointment

earlier in the summer, new miller Simon Dodd will be proving he can rise to the challenge as he delivers the project to various community groups across the borough. The grant has enabled

Worsbrough Mill to purchase a new mobile bread oven and trailer which they can use both at the 17th century mill and out in the community to make teaching basic life and baking skills more accessible to all ages and abilities. A rewarding and therapeutic

process with intensely satisfying finished results, Simon and the team are hoping their workshops

will encourage people in Barnsley to cook and bake at home along with promoting the benefits of healthy eating to cut obesity levels. The workshops will also be used

to tackle loneliness and language or cultural barriers some members of the community face, along with improving mental well-being. While mainly hands-on using

organic flour produced at the mill, the workshops will also see Simon talk about the milling process from corn to cob. Worsbrough Mill is one of only 33 working mills remaining in the country and uses slow stone grinding to retain

the wheat’s goodness. The workshops are due to

start this September and will be available to both adult and children’s community groups in Barnsley, with varied demonstrations planned to learn things such as basic bread cakes to continental loaves.
