Autumn driving
Autumn driving brings many changes for road users, from dazzlingly blinding sunlight to the first icy windscreen of the season.
October delivers some of the worst driving conditions of the year as the weather changes and the clocks go back. Make sure you modify your driving styles to suit the autumnal weather.
Greasy road conditions caused by falling leaves, darker evenings and the first heavy rain of the autumn traditionally send accident rates up in October.
More leaves on the roads means
a greater chance of skidding, they can also hide potholes, speed bumps, road markings and dips. Drive carefully through them and much like with ice and water, avoid braking hard.
Cold autumn mornings can
also bring fog which can greatly limit your driving visibility and perception of distance.
A common mistake drivers make during foggy conditions is using their
full beam lights instead of staying with dipped lights. This only makes visibility worse because your full beam lights will bounce off the fog and create glare.
When driving through fog, slow down and stay well behind the car in front, so you so have adequate time to stop if you need to.
As the sun sets earlier and is lower in the sky its glare will be at eye level more during peak driving
times. Keeping a pair of sunglasses in your car and the windscreen clear is still essential.
Colder mornings can kill off a failing car battery and if it’s over five years old then it could need replacing. If your car sounds sluggish then it might be worth renewing it now rather than getting caught out with a flat battery on a cold winter morning. Whatever the season, consider the change in road conditions.
