Pets that go bump in the night…
With Debbie Fryer of Pets are Pals
Now that summer is finally fading, we can breathe a sigh of relief as we look forward to cold cosy nights in, wrapping up warm and enjoying the many festivities that lie ahead.
But the same can’t be said for our pets. Autumn can be a stressful time for pets, what with the trick or treaters knocking at the door and the constant thud of fireworks from October through to January. In a whizz, your usually cool furry friend can turn into a destructive, boisterous or timid animal and leave you feeling stressed, too.
There are ways in which you can help them keep calm this autumn. At Pets are Pals, we have a range of calming products from collars to tablets, spot treatments to plug-in diffusers that contain Valerian, a natural and effective remedy that reduces stress, anxiety and hyperactivity.
Many dogs can be territorial so be sure to keep them away from doors when Halloween comes a’knocking to prevent them barking at visiting children. Keep lit pumpkins away from
swishing and wagging tails and hide any treats away from sniffing noses as chocolate and sweets can be lethal to pets. As Bonfire Night gets closer, walk dogs during daylight hours when fireworks are less likely to be lit. If they are nervous, keep them on a lead to prevent them from running off. ID tags and microchips will ensure your pet is returned to you safely if this does happen. Keep safe on the dark roads by switching to a reflective collar or harness. Flashing ID tags are

a good idea if you usually walk your pets through woodlands or fields with low lighting. We always try and have one person stay at home with our pets during the festivities. But if this isn’t possible, make sure all windows and curtains and closed to muffle the noise. Leaving the TV or radio on can provide a gentle distraction. Create a hiding place or den for your
pet to run off to, such as under the bed; put their toys or a blanket there for familiarity to reduce anxiety.
Make sure cats are kept indoors at night and cover small animals’ hutches with blankets to block the flashing lights and sounds. Give them plenty of treats and extra bedding to bury in but try not to give them fresh vegetables in the cold afternoons and evenings as these can cause tummy troubles when frozen.
