Mayflower 400 is the commemoration of the sailing of The Mayflower to the New World, in 1620, an extremely significant event in history for both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. In conjunction with 12 other towns and cities across the UK, Dartmouth Mayflower has a number of ambitious Projects and Events planned during 2020.
MAYFLOWER 400 EDUCATION PROJECTS
Dartmouth’s Education Projects are exciting and wide-ranging and will involve the primary and secondary schools and colleges in the area. Of course, a lot of project work will take place in the schools around this subject, but the following are the larger projects that we are working on with teachers, leading up to 2020.
■ CHILDREN’S BOOk OF MAyFLOWER STORIES: Each group of Primary School children will write and illustrate a different section of the Mayflower journey – including the period that the Mayflower and Speedwell were moored in Dartmouth at Bayards Cove. Each school will take a real family on which to base the story of their section, and groups of children will work on their stories under the guidance of their teachers. The stories and illustrations will then be organised to create a published book and will be on sale at various venues in the town, and potentially in the other twelve Mayflower 400 UK destinations. The second phase of this project will be to produce an audio version of the book for those children with visu- al impairments or learning difficulties, and generally to add to the enjoy- ment of the book. This version will be created using actors and atmospheric sounds and the audio file will be sold with the printed version. The children will be so proud to see their work in a published book!
■ FILM PROJECT: Peter Nicholson, the award-winning film and TV producer and director will lead this exciting and creative project. Filmmaker teams will be set up, with South West filmmakers acting as mentors for young people (16-19 years) who are interested in filmmaking. Each team will produce a short film inspired by an aspect of the Mayflower Story. The project will involve school and college students and South West writers, filmmakers, technicians and actors, both behind and in front of the camera. The short films will be showcased together at events throughout the South West and potentially in other Mayflower Towns.
■ SCuLPTuRE PROJECT: Dartmouth Academy students, led by artist Mark Gregory, will design and make a Sculpture of a figure representing a Mayflower Pilgrim. This will be erected on the South Embankment and under planted with grasses. It will be one of the points of interest along Dartmouth’s Mayflower Trail and will be an attractive and informative addition to the Embankment, telling Dartmouth’s part in the story through images incorporated into the design.
