Things to do THIS SUMMER IN SOUTH DEVON
is from August 30 to September 1. As well as the big cameo events such as the fireworks and fete there’s also tons of lovely races and children’s events including crab fishing, pavement painting and even an ice-cream eating competition - see page 38 for details And from August 11 to 18 the streets of Salcombe are transformed for the Salcombe Town Regatta. Highlights include a firework display on the Thursday evening and the famous crabbers’ race on the Friday. Crabbing boats from the town and local ports race out of the harbour, over the bar and back again, all decked out in bunting and fancy dress. There’s also a beautiful torch- lit lantern procession of boats on the estuary.
Attend a regatta The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta this summer Go Zorbing! Like a hamster in
a wheel this whacky sport from New Zea- land involves getting strapped into a huge transparent bouncy ball and being pushed down a hill. Zorbing is becoming more and more popular and can be enjoyed with a friend or relative, also strapped in, as you roll and bounce at speeds of up to 30mph. Extreme West has sites at great hill spots around Devon. They also specialise in other adrenaline activities such as car racing and flight experiences. For more details see www.
extremewest.co.uk There’s also a gentler form of Zorbing, done while floating on water. Ashburton’s River Dart Country Park has Zorb balls for adults and children on their lake. Here, instead of being strapped in and pushed down a hill, you climb in and walk or crawl while gently floating around the lake.
