The Dartmouth Classic Weekend 2018 T
he 2018 Dartmouth Classic Weekend will be held over the weekend of the 6th to
8th July. This is a biannual event sailed under the joint burgees of the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the British Classic Yacht Club. Entry is open to classic yachts defined as follows: designed before 1969 or designed between 1969 and the end of 1974, (for this latter period only accepted classic designs are eligible), or designed after 1974 as a near replica of or in the style of a pre-1969 boat. Classic yachts are divided into several classes for the racing, loosely based on their level of authenticity. On Saturday July 7th there will
be two races, around triangular courses, in Start Bay. A single longer race will take place in the bay on the following day. At 11 o’clock on Sunday July 8th,
prior to the start of the day’s race, there will be a parade of classic yachts within Dartmouth Harbour. There will be a full commentary on the parade over the public- address system which will help spectators identify the yachts and
hear something of each yacht’s history. Although some of these yachts have had whole books written about them, don’t worry, only the potted version will be broadcast in the commentary! For yachts of this era, when timber was the main construction material, to have been preserved / restored and still be sailing today guarantees that the parade will be a beautiful spectacle. One notable entry this year is Cynthia, owned and restored by
“the parade will be a beautiful spectacle”
Peter Lucas at his Old Mill Quay Boatyard in Dartmouth. Her launch will coincide with the Classic Weekend. Cynthia has quite a pedigree. She was designed and built in 1910 by W T Jackett in Falmouth, Cornwall. Originally she was a gaff rigged day sailor/racer.
In later years she was converted to a Bermudian rig. With successive owners Cynthia was a successful ocean and inshore racer. Much of her life was spent in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Since 2012 Peter has restored her to an authentic century old racing yacht and returned her to the original gaff rig. She promises to be quite a sight in the parade of sail as well as racing in Start Bay. To enjoy the parade of
sail, anywhere on the South Embankment should ensure good views and be within earshot of the public-address system. Royal Dart Yacht Club, Kingswear, DEVON, TQ6 0AB
