and fantastic views over the river Dart. This award-winning 17th century hotel is privately owned by Nigel and Anne Way and is an iconic and unmissable building, situated in the perfect place to enjoy everything that South Devon has to offer.
History Originally two merchant houses,
The Royal Castle was combined in 1782 to become a coaching inn. Tudor fireplaces, flagstone floors, spiral staircases, priest holes and an original bell-board survive as relics of its history. Huge oak beams in the Galleon Bar, believed to have been washed ashore from the wreckage of a Spanish Man-of-War and other nods to its nautical history include a collection of antiquarian ships’ logs, lights and crockery. The hotel also has an impressive list of visitors that includes Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck and Faye Dunaway.

Room, is situated on the first floor and has fine harbour and river views. Head Chef, Ankur Biswas, creates seasonal menus offering an excellent range of locally sourced, good quality food and drink with specialities such as smoked fish, local crab, scallops and traditional Carvery roasts served every Sunday. The ground floor is home to two popular bars; The Galleon, decorat- ed as a traditional English Pub with lots of atmosphere is a great place to meet, enjoy a quick bite to eat and watch the world go by. During autumn and winter, log fires burn and spit roasts are a special weekly feature. The Harbour Bar, situated opposite,
is a contemporary and bright space and is the perfect place to meet friends for coffee or glass of wine and
during the rugby season, screens all the high profile matches. Both bars are well stocked with lo- cal beers, ales, wines and liqueurs, in addition to world-renowned brands. The restaurant and bars are open for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon traditional Devon cream teas and supper. Many special breaks and events are
