QUARTERLY ECONOMIC SURVEY RESULTS Figures from the latest Chamber Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for Q1, kindly sponsored by the University of Leicester School of Business, which show the number of businesses considering investment in new machinery has almost doubled in the first three months of 2018 compared with the latter end of 2017, are very much welcomed. It once again goes to show the robustness and
2018 CHAMBER BUSINESS AWARDS I begin the latest edition of my Last Word piece by issuing a rallying cry to any Chamber member that has not yet applied for any of the Chamber Business Awards categories. The annual Chamber Business Awards are a
fantastic way to acknowledge and celebrate the phenomenal businesses and business professionals we have across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. The deadline for submitting an application for
any of the 12 categories (you can enter as many as you like) is fast approaching – Friday 18 May – and I really would urge any business, regardless of size or sector, to get involved in what is a standout and highly prestigious part of Chamber activity. Just being named a finalist is a great
achievement and can deliver many tangible and added-value benefits to successful applicants. What’s more, you’re part of something that is ultimately greater than the sum of its parts – the region’s only business awards run by business, for business, with the potential for national recognition. What is for certain is that, with categories across
three counties ranging from Business Improvement through Technology, Community Impact, Outstanding Growth, Marketing Campaign of the Year, Commitment to People Development, Apprentice of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Excellence in Customer Service, Excellence in International Trade, Small Business of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year, there's an award relevant to every business.
If you have any questions relating to the application process, don’t hesitate to contact our Events team on 0333 320 0333 (option 2) or visit

tenacity of the businesses we have here across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. That said, businesses are forced to adapt to
pressures and changing political and business landscapes and as such are not immune to various external factors. This makes the Chamber’s QES so crucial, as it pulls together the views and predictions from the region’s business community in a way that can be analysed and gives the Chamber an authoritative and insightful mandate to campaign and get results on behalf of its members.

NORTH NOTTS BID Upon becoming Chamber President back in November last year, I signalled my intention – among a number of other key priorities - to promote the ground-breaking North Notts Business Improvement District, or BID. This bold initiative is led by business and
covers the whole of Bassetlaw District; a first in the UK. With a budget of £3.5m over five years, the BID has the capacity to help bring about a real transformation in North Notts, and I’m very proud to be involved in my role as Vice-Chair. Next month, North Notts BID is sponsoring
the Chamber’s ‘How to secure public sector contracts’ event – a free seminar open to all local businesses which will focus on public procurement processes. Its purpose is to boost the confidence of smaller local organisations to tender for locally-available work across Nottinghamshire, while showcasing where to find opportunities and examples of best practice.
The event will be held at the Worksop Turbine Innovation Centre on 12 June and more information about this, and North Notts BID in general, can be found at

HS2 I think the fact that a free seminar delivered by the Chamber in partnership with HS2 last month was ‘sold out’ within 24 hours of being announced tells you everything you need to know about the appetite in the region to utilise opportunities and, ultimately, explore business growth. This kind of demand serves to show the rest
of the country and the world that the East Midlands is a region that means business. It is a place where we make things, collaborate and get things done. This particular event looked at identifying
ways businesses can take advantage of this huge infrastructure project and how to capitalise on the wider opportunities HS2 will bring. Once here, it has been estimated that HS2 will
not only improve passenger and freight capacity on rail routes through the East Midlands but will add around £4bn a year to the GVA to the region and parts of Yorkshire. Clearly huge opportunities exist and it is great
to see such enthusiasm from Chamber members with regards to how they too can benefit.
