INTERVIEW Purpose A new

Data might be getting a rough ride at the moment but, when utilised correctly, the associated opportunities are endless. Jamie Bourn, Director at full-service marketing agency Purpose Media, spoke to Business Network Editor Nathan Fearn about how intelligent use of data analytics is helping take the award-winning business to new heights.

If Purpose Media’s evolution from ecommerce web design company to full-service marketing agency is impressive, the rise of its Account Director, Jamie Bourn, is equally eye-catching. Having started out with the South Normanton-based Chamber Strategic Partner as an apprentice seven years ago, his development has gone hand-in-hand with that of the company’s. While a career in ecommerce and marketing wasn’t a

given – Jamie pursued other interests at college based around his passion for sport and fitness – it was, nevertheless, an opportunity he has not looked back from. “I always had a passion for web design but it wasn’t

something I particularly understood a great deal about,” explains Jamie. “I was interested in doing what a lot of people want to

do from the outset; the creative side of things. However, I quickly recognised that my core skillset centred round understanding customers and being able to present ideas in a way that is valued by them, as well as establishing and building relationships, conducting engaging presentations and delivering sales pitches - I was very much driven by client relationships and delivery.” Now, Jamie sits as one of three directors under founder

and Managing Director Matt Wheatcroft, tasked with continuing to drive the organisation forward. His days of being an apprentice may be long gone,

however Jamie’s formative years with Purpose Media has, he believes, given him an invaluable grounding and a holistic view of the business – the learnings from which continue to influence him in his current role. “I think one of the key benefits having started off as an

apprentice is that I was able to work through each of the different departments,” says Jamie. “That helped give me a rounded knowledge in

everything from digital marketing, content generation and the design and development of websites and that’s enabled me to be well suited to my current position, which predominantly sees me advising clients on the right strategy for their business. “What I am communicating to clients when I meet them

isn’t a sales pitch, it’s based on an involvement in, and understanding of, all the various areas of ecommerce and marketing; it’s based on experience and understanding.” So how has Purpose Media evolved so dynamically in

such a relatively short space of time? Jamie believes it is the result of various factors but key has been an expansion and honing of the services on offer and the ability to deliver while forging long-lasting relationships. “We’ve moved away from being predominantly focused

on growing through acquiring new business. That’s important, but it’s also about consolidation and looking

after and harnessing the relationships we already have in place,” explains Jamie. “We have some great people working here and we work

with some great clients and we need to make sure we look after these clients and ensure we are helping them achieve their targets and objectives. It isn’t about making a quick quid from clients, we want to demonstrate value resulting in long-term collaboration.” The transition to a one-stop-shop operation, which included the acquisition of video production experts A-Star Media in 2016 along with the company’s founders Katrina and Jon Starkie – now Purpose Media’s Marketing Services Director and Head of Video respectively – brought with it many advantages, however positioning the company and its new-found capabilities remained a priority. “Having gone from a web company that bought different

companies on we had to learn how to join all of that up as one offer and focus on what we can deliver,” explains Jamie. “We were a bespoke ecommerce company that built tech-based systems but what we recognised when working
