With a specialist dementia team who are all fully trained Dementia Friends champions, The Porterbrook staff look past the condition and see that there is more to their residents than dementia, encouraging and supporting them throughout their stay. They know that no two people are the same; they each have their own unique personality, life history and likes or dislikes. They also understand that dementia can not only bring overwhelming change and uncertainty, but also practical and emotional struggles. With the well-being, happiness and comfort of their residents The Porterbrook’s main priority, they encourage, support and nurture through excellent residential and respite care. This includes

Porterbrook use music therapy which works the right side of the brain that hasn’t been lost to the disease. With a baby grand piano and a karaoke machine for residents to use, they also work with dementia music charity, Lost Chord, with regular sing-a-long visits that bring back memories from days gone by. Keeping active in the fresh air is beneficial to both physical and mental health and relieves tension and anxiety. The Porterbrook have a gardening club where they invite local schoolchildren to help the elderly while pottering about in the private secure garden. Many residents may have been homemakers whose families have relied on them for many years. To instil that sense of pride back, the staff allow residents to help in their new home with small tasks like setting the table, folding laundry or re-enacting cleaning tasks with a water spray and duster. And taking them back to their childhoods, The Porterbrook also work with external activity groups such as Smiles Ponies and Zoo Lab where Shetland ponies and exotic animals are brought into the care home for the residents to see and handle.
