Ladies of the

With its magnificent architecture, alluring interiors and fairytale-like history, Wentworth Woodhouse’s elaborate craftsmanship has seen it become the backdrop for some of TV and film’s finest productions in recent years.

digital photography.

Gill first met Kay at an event at Wentworth Woodhouse where they discussed the possibility of a collaborative photo shoot at the house, agreeing it was an ideal location to exhibit Kay’s exquisite handmade gowns.

But this year, Scholes photographer Gill Batson of Batsonelli Photography has organised a fashion photo shoot within South Yorkshire’s finest residence, bringing together various local photographers, models, make-up artists and a couture dress designer.

Growing up in the neighbouring village, Gill has always been fascinated by the imposing stately home. Ever since walking past it as a girl and seeing Lady Mabel College’s PE students playing tennis on the front lawn, she’s been enthralled by what lies inside. To help raise money towards its ongoing restoration, Gill’s aim was to produce a charity calendar for

2019 while also giving all involved an amazing opportunity to add to their portfolios.

The photo shoot, which took place in March, showcased the work of local designer, Kay Heeley of Angel Couture in the most romantic setting.

A wedding photographer for the past eight years, Gill first got behind the lens over 30 years ago whilst working for British Steel after being asked to cover an admin job for three months; in reality it was taking and processing photos for the steelworks’ newspaper.

Having no idea about how to use a camera or darkroom, Gill set about learning the basic fundamental skills some 20 years before the dawn of

All of the gowns at Angel Couture are truly bespoke and include high end couture and dancewear, with anything from 40 to 160 hours of labour going into an individual design. One gown used in the shoot, a teal lace dress with ruched bustle was adorned with almost 3,000 rhinestones which were individually applied by hand. Since starting her business aged 19 in 2004, Kay has gone from making bridal gowns for family and friends to being Queen of the Ocean, Jane MacDonald’s dress designer for her tours and performances. She has also worked as a senior designer for DSI London, the team behind the Strictly Come Dancing costumes, creating dresses for some of the dance industry’s top performers. During the shoot, nine models of all ages, from teenage girls to mature ladies, had the chance to wear show-stopping designs from Angel Couture’s two signature collections – the 1920s Art Deco inspired Flowers collection and the Showcase collection with dance and performance influences. Twelve South Yorkshire

photographers clicked away throughout the day, capturing the essence and beauty of Kay’s work in the aristocratic setting of six main rooms within Wentworth Woodhouse.

With muted stone, the pillared hall entrance made for the perfect backdrop at which to offset the bold and vibrant evening wear featuring striking jewel-like colours such as ruby reds, sapphire blues and glistening metallics.

The dramatic staircase was lit up with dresses that cascaded down the steps; Lady Joyce’s bedroom laid bare some of Angel Couture’s more muted pieces; while the Long Gallery overlooking the West Front showcased the Mother of the Bride line, all stitched with individuality. The chapel was the obvious choice for a bridal shoot, with everything from skimming pure white gowns to those with full skirts and boned bodices plus a stunning vintage wedding dress trimmed with antique lace and a sheer draped top.

And upstairs in the Georgian marble saloon, the dancewear came to life as the models highlighted the movement of pieces such as a silver flapper dress.

With lots of lovely images to choose from, Gill is currently looking for sponsorship to help fund the calendar’s production costs to enable all profits to be donated to Wentworth Woodhouse.
