PETS Summer health and safety With Debbie Fryer of Pets are Pals, Sheffield
All pet owners love the summer months as it gives us the opportunity to go on more adventures together and laugh as our pets roll around in the garden.
However, the warmer weather can also pose many risks for our furry friends, too. From pesky parasites to sore paws, here we look at how to keep our pets happy and healthy this summer.
Worming
All pet owners can be guilty of not sticking to a systematic worming regime; it is not something we automatically think of due to not being able to see worms. However, worm eggs are
everywhere and as soon as your pet ventures outside they can become infected. This infestation grows throughout the day and by teatime your pet could become home to a host of wriggling, squirming disgustingness. Nice. As with everything, prevention is always better than the cure and there are various worming treatments available to avoid the two main types of worms; roundworms and tapeworms. Roundworms are like
earthworms, around two-inches long and can be seen in faeces or vomit. Tapeworms are flat and can reach several metres in length. They attach themselves to our pets’ intestines and can be difficult to remove. If you notice your pet dragging its bottom across the floor, it may have tapeworm. Look out for diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal swelling, weight loss or loss of appetite. If left untreated, worms can damage the animal’s gut and stunt growth. At Pets are Pals, we can discuss with you how often your breed/size of pet should be wormed which is often every three months.
Fleas and Ticks Other unwanted visitors in the
summer are fleas. It’s enough to make your skin crawl but contrary to popular belief, fleas love a clean house as much as a not-so-clean one.

A T S
They thrive in the carpets and soft furnishings in your home and can also survive outside in summer. Adult fleas produce around 20 eggs a day or 500 in their two-week lifetime. These eggs fall on the floor or onto our pets’ bedding and hatch due to warmth and vibrations. They are around 2-3mm and only jump between animals when in very close contact. They feed several times a day and produce an itchy reaction so look out for your pet scratching themselves.
Check regularly for these little mites. Stand your pet over damp plain paper while combing their coat; any tiny specs which fall off will absorb moisture and produce pink circles, this being the blood. Exterminate existing fleas with spot treatment or a flea collar. Regularly vacuum all floors and soft furnishings, washing pet bedding on 60 degree washes. A flea spray for the house will kill any remaining infestations you cannot see.
