Band
The North Jersey band divi- sion has had an exciting 2017-2018 year. We have had two wonderful All North Jersey concerts featuring four fantastic bands from students in grades 7-12. The high school and junior high school concert band festivals continue to be annual cel- ebrations of the education through ensemble performance. Our seventh Elementary Band
Festival will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at South Orange Mid- dle School. 185 sixth grade students will perform in two ensembles con- ducted by Brian Michalowski from H.B. Whitehorne Middle School and Jenna Hanratty from Eric S. Smith Middle School. Forty spon- soring directors will help run the one-day festival concluding with the concert at 2:00 p.m. These successful region events do not happen by themselves. It takes many individuals and school districts working in cooperation to make region events work. Thank you to all of our conductors, adju- dicators, managers, hosts, audition chairs and coordinators who make all these fantastic events happen. Anyone interested in conducting any region ensemble should log on to the region website and complete an application. If you would like to get involved as a host, manager, or assist in any way please contact Lew- is, Diana or Greg at band@njsma. com. We look forward to working
with you again next year! Lewis C. Kelly, Diana May, & Gregory Mulford

Orchestra I want to congratulate all of
the Region I Orchestra teachers and students for making the 2017-2018 school year exciting for everyone. The HS and JHS Symphonic Or- chestra concerts were an excellent display of the orchestral talent in the Region. I would like to give a spe- cial thank you to the teachers who helped with auditions and hosted rehearsals and concerts. Your assis- tance helps create a special experi- ence for our students. The Region I Orchestra Festival
was held on April 19th at South Or- ange Middle School. Adjudicators David Wroe and Lanny Paykin were able to work with some great middle school orchestras. The Region I El- ementary Honors Orchestra Festival was on April 28th. 200 students in grades 4–6 performed in three dif- ferent orchestras that were lead by Chryselle Angderson, Michael Hol- ak, and Joe Manken. Elementary Coordinators Tina An and Shang- Yin Lee did an incredible job orga- nizing the event.
As the 2017-2018 school year
wraps up, things are already in the works for next school year. If you are interested in helping host a rehears- al, manage an orchestra, conduct an ensemble, or become involved in an- other way, please email me at orches-
tra@njsma.com. Your enthusiasm is always welcome.

South Jersey Junior High School Band Concert. The performances were outstanding. The conductors this year were Michael Daly (Pleas- antville HS) and Jeremy Leighty (Lacey Township MS). Daniel Mc- Grath (Russell O. Brackman MS) and Jon Ratcliffe (Rowan Univer- sity) provided excellent assistance as managers for these ensembles. This concert would not be pos- sible without the commitment and dedication of our colleagues. Joe Brausam
C (Berkeley Township
Schools), our Junior High Band Co- ordinator, was responsible for orga- nizing a wonderful event that our students will cherish for many years. Special thanks to Derek Rohaly (Mainland Regional HS) and Marc Spatz (Fernwood Avenue MS) who offered their facilities and percussion equipment for the rehearsals and the performance. Our 11th Annual Chamber En-
semble Concert was held on Feb- ruary 8th at Cedar Creek HS. The ensemble coaches were Brass: Rick Schwartz (Oakcrest HS), Percussion: Jim Glenn (Galloway Township MS), Sax: William Conn (Samuel S. Yellin School), Woodwind: Kev- in Hrubos (Egg Harbor Township Schools), Clarinet: Lawrence Little (Roland Rogers ES), Flute: Tara Rozanski (Conservatory of Musical Arts), and Tuba/Euphonium: Joseph Sino (Millville HS). Jonathan Porco (Absegami HS) coordinated this successful event.
