It is hard to believe that it is May...I feel like this year has flown by! We survived several Nor’easters, Music Trips, and
Spring Musicals. We deserve a summer off! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who helped with the 2018 All-State Treble Chorus.
Many hands do make light work, and we had many hands to help pull this season off. The New Jersey All-State Treble Choir, under the direction of Mark Boyle of Seton Hill University, performed exquisitely. It was a musical experience that enriched the lives of our students beyond what anyone could imagine. I am grateful to Jennifer Alagna for her tireless ef- fort in managing this group, and Joe Cantaffa who doubled as co-manager and Production Manager. Thank you to Adam Good our Housing Manager, David Taylor our Head Chaperone, and to all the chaperones who worked together to make this experience safe and fun for all! Our 2018 All-State Choral Auditions are done, and the Mixed Chorus for 2018 and the Treble Chorus for 2019 have been chosen! Congratulations to all who were accepted! The first rehearsal for the Mixed Chorus will be Saturday, June 10th from 2:00 – 5:30 pm at Monroe Township High School. All directors and accepted students will be notified of all rehearsals and all announcements will also be on the NJMEA website. Our Mixed Chorus conductor this year is Christopher Thomas from Rowan University. Our Treble Chorus conductor will be Lynnel Jenkins from the Princeton Girls Choir. Our auditions went extremely well, and we will be sharing all information directly with directors and students as soon
as it is ready. A huge thank you to our host schools and directors: West Deptford High School (South Audition) Bill Yerkes host; and Parsippany Hills High School (North Auditions) Kathleen Muka host. Thank you to Rick Retzko for continuing to refine the online registration process and being so patient with our many requests. I also want to give a heartfelt thanks to Christie Scott and Barbara Retzko our audition managers. Cheryl Breitzman kept us organized on the audition days. Our Choral Procedures Committee Steven Bell, Tom Voorhis, Jamie Bunce, Hillary Colton, Julianna LoBiondo, Mat- thew Lee, Helen Stanley, and Mike Doheny – all worked behind the scenes to collect, organize, check math, and enter the scores on both days. A special thanks to all who judged both weekends! We can’t do it without your commitment; please know you are appreciated! As I reflect on my first year as Choral Procedures Chair, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to all who have made this a smooth transition. It is the wisdom of the veterans and the energy of the newbies that inspires me to keep working to make this organization as strong and welcoming as possible. So thank you all, for your help and dedication! When it boils down to it, all of our endeavors must continue to focus on helping our students have a life-changing experience through choral music. As we look to broaden our All-State choir reach please talk to your choral colleagues around the state and have them get involved in All-State Choir. They will find a network of invaluable and crazy choral conductors and their students will have a musical experience they will not forget! One final word: You should consider applying for our 2019-2020 All-State Mixed or Treble Choral conductor! Don’t miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime.
