Congratulations to the students of the 2018 NJMEA All-State Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band! The con-
cert on February 24th at NJPAC was incredible and all students involved should be very proud of their performance. We are very grateful to our managers for all of their hard work in making sure the students and conductors were well taken care of during the rehearsals and performance. Our symphonic band managers this year were Deb Knisely and Ashlen Udell. Our wind ensemble managers were Rich Barrieres and Erika Sulich. Thank you so much Deb, Ashlen, Rich, and Erika!
There are so many people behind the scenes that make the all-state band weekend possible for our students. Thank
you to all of the chaperones and committee members who made sure the students had a great experience. Special thanks to Scott Visco for coordinating all of our percussion needs; Darryl Bott and Todd Nichols from Rutgers Uni- versity for being wonderful rehearsal hosts; and Joe Cantaffa for organizing all of the logistics for the weekend as our production manager.
I would also like to congratulate this year’s all-state band 2018 NJ Governor’s Award recipients. They are Ethan
Marmolejos from Watchung Hills High School and Caleb Woo from Ridge High School. This is a tremendous achievement that these fine students, their family, and their teachers should be very proud of.
The 2018-2019 audition solo list is included in this issue. Audition information is on the website. Continue to check
www.njmea.org throughout the summer for updates, conference information, and important links.
The NJMEA conference was filled with wonderful sessions and performances that enriched attendees’ knowledge and thinking about wind-band education. If you are interested in presenting a session at next year’s NJMEA confer- ence or having your band perform, please check the NJMEA website (
www.njmea.org) for applications. The applica- tions for the 2019 conference will be available in the late spring on the website. Our greatest sources of professional development are our colleagues here in New Jersey. If you have a topic, idea, instructional strategy, or any knowledge you believe could be beneficial to other band teachers, please apply to present a session.
Best of luck on the remainder of the school year! continued on page 14 TEMPO 12 MAY 2018
