mark of my time as NJMEA Presi- dent, I want to take some time to explain the strategic planning pro- cess we have been undergoing since February. I made mention of it in the March issue of TEMPO, but the importance of this process warrants a fuller explanation.
A What Is A Strategic Plan? You may have heard about stra-
tegic planning in the context of your school district, and NJMEA is un- dertaking this process for the same purpose. Strategic planning allows an organization to lay out priori- ties for the coming years. By the end of this process we will have a new (or at least revised) mission state- ment, clear goals that are aligned to our mission, specific steps to realize those goals, and authentic ways to measure our progress. It’s essentially a well-designed lesson plan for the next 4 years.
Why Do We Need A Strategic Plan?
NJMEA leadership turns over
every two years. What I have been told, and what I am learning first
TEMPO
s we near the end of the school year and I ap- proach the mid-way
hand, is that that time flies and by the time you see a few initiatives come to fruition, you’re done and some- one else is President. In the absence of any other guiding document, the direction of the organization is set by the President and can shift with each change in leadership. This is where the strategic plan becomes essential. This plan will guide our current and future leadership down the same path, providing long-term stability and direction. We’ve all experienced initiatives in our districts that come and go seemingly before they even get started. The strategic planning process helps ensure that doesn’t happen with NJMEA. We have gone through this process in the past and many of the changes that have taken place over the past decade or so have been informed by previously com- pleted strategic plans.
Who Is Creating This Strategic Plan?
The strategic planning com- mittee is comprised of 15 NJMEA members from a variety of districts and specific areas of expertise. The committee was designed specifi- cally to ensure that the diversity of experience within our member- ship was represented. Additionally, as you probably have seen, we are
2
soliciting the feedback of the en- tire membership and non-members through a survey that was emailed out several weeks ago. This process is being facilitated by Scott Sheehan, the Immediate Past President of the NAfME Eastern Division. Scott is experienced in leading state MEAs through this process and we are grateful to benefit from his expertise in this regard.
What Happens Next? Our goal is to have the strategic
planning process wrapped up by this summer, with a plan approved by the Executive Board and put in place for the coming school year. This plan will be shared with all of you and it’s my intention to keep you apprised of how we’re working to accomplish our strategic goals. It will then be the charge of the Board of Directors to ensure that all of our decisions are made through the lens of our stra- tegic plan. As members of NJMEA you will know that our organization has a mission and that your board is working to see that mission come to life in our programming and oppor- tunities for you and your students.
