work we do in our music rooms helps our students eventually become grown ups who can sing Happy Birthday without making people cringe; clap along (correctly) when music plays at a ball game; dance at their child’s wedding; and get goosebumps when they hear beautiful music. In other words, as Feierabend says, we want them to be tuneful, beatful, artful humans! First Steps in Music is Feiera-
bend’s curriculum for young chil- dren (Pre-K through 1st grade) that features an 8-Part “Workout” for every lesson. This is accom- plished in an engaging and devel- opmentally-appropriate way using authentic repertoire. The program is based on research and best prac- tices in music education. The aim is that children become tuneful, beatful, artful and that they are well on their way to musical inde- pendence. For
older kids who have a
musical foundation in place, Fei- erabend
created Conversational
Solfege, his Kodály adaptation for North American children. This music literacy program has an in- tense focus on building inner hear- ing. The ultimate goal is to ensure that students become independent musical thinkers who not only know how to read and write music notation, but who can think and perform musical thoughts that they can then accurately read and write into notation. The program is made up of a sequence of units, each building on the last. Each unit features one rhythmic or tonal idea (for exam-

ple, quarter/eighth in 6/8 for Unit 3 or “do-re-mi-so” in Unit 5). Stu- dents are unfamiliar with the mu- sical idea at the outset of each unit. By the end of the 12-Step process, though, they are able to audiate, perform, improvise, read, write down, and compose patterns and phrases using that musical idea into notation. If either (or both!) of these pro- grams sound interesting to you, I invite you to join the conversation on the Feierabend Fundamentals page on Facebook (as well as our FAME of the Mid-Atlantic Face- book page) and please consider one of the courses being offered in our immediate area:
