State Conference in East Brunswick this past February. The competition, initiated in 2008-2009, has received approximately 150 composition submissions from both middle and high school students over the life of the pro- gram. The compositions represent works for solo instru- ments, chamber ensembles of various instrumentation, vocal ensembles, jazz ensembles, string ensembles, bands and full symphony orchestra. Students have been extremely creative with their
T
work, such as the middle school finalist this year, Aadh- itya Raam Ashok from John Adams Middle School, who featured Sitar, Percussion and Piano in his composition “Inside Taj Mahal.” The Grand Prize winner, John Drey- er from Northern Highlands High School, utilized com- plex notation structure in his piano composition “Love Song with Piano Resonance, Op. 14.” Finalist and previ- ous Grand Prize winner Matt Wisotsky from West Mor- ris Mendham High School, submitted a wonderful work for band titled “Exploration,” and Rishubh Thaper from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, a previous Finalist at both the middle and high school levels, sub- mitted the beautiful piano composition, “Polonaise Dia- bolica.” Recordings of these outstanding compositions, as well as finalist compositions from the previous years of the competition are archived on the NJMEA website and available for listening. Celebrated New Jersey composer, Patrick Burns, pro-
vided excellent feedback for each of the finalists during a two-hour session at the conference that was attended by teachers, family and other conference attendees. The recordings of the compositions were played for the au- dience and the students were presented with certificates and awards for their successful compositions.

Congratulations to all of our student composers and their teachers! All New Jersey middle and high school teachers are invited to submit student compositions for the 2018- 2019 competition. Application information is posted on the NJMEA website. Deadline for submission is in No- vember. This should give our young composers plenty of time to put their compositions together. In 2008, we had no idea how successful this program would become. Please encourage your students to participate and be- come a part of the second decade. If you would like to become a part of the committee, please let us know. We are excited to consider expansion of the program to in- clude more levels and genres.
