It’s March and there’s still snow on the ground at Connaught Golf Club, so you’d think executive professional Trevor Ellerman has nothing to do.
Far from it.
Some renovations to the clubhouse are underway. He’s planning future projects. You don’t get named best golf course in the city without hard work or a smile on your face, both of which he’s doing a lot of these days.
“It’s a validation that what you’re doing is working and that you’re headed in the right direction,” said Ellerman, now in his fourth year at Connaught after a long time managing Redcliff’s Riverview course. “We’re in the
process of changing some of the stigmas, creating our own space. So it’s a validation of where we’re headed, where we’re trying to get to.”
Connaught’s been a mainstay — the original course opened in 1919 but the current one’s been around since 1954 — in the Hat community, but some key changes in the past decade have really opened up its appeal.
First was a major irrigation project in 2011. Connaught always had lots of goregeous trees lining its fairways, but now they’ve grown substantially and the grass underneath is heartier. Everything’s more lush and green.
Then there’s Dustin Zdan, who recently achieved a rare
status among Canada’s golf course superintendants as a master of his craft. Ellerman says the course is far more consistent than it used to be, making for a far more pleasurable round every time out.
But it’s not just the course itself that has seen a transition. Ellerman says he’s worked hard to ensure customer service has grown by leaps and bounds too.
“I think what we’ve done is tried to create a more down- to-earth, easier-going environment,” said Ellerman, who along with head pro Derek Berger has rid the club of that stereotypical notion of the stuffy golf course. “When people come here there’s not intimidation... Derek and his staff have done a great job creating an environment that is not intimidating.”
