Mom and Pop Shop ranks at the top MEDICINE HAT NEWS

You’re simply not going to find many people — anywhere — who know transmissions better than Darrell Bierback, who started working on his first at the age of 15 and never stopped.

That might have something to do with his shop winning the award for best transmission service in Medicine Hat for the fifth straight year.

“It’s certainly great that the public wants to vote us No. 1 for transmission shops five years in a row — it’s s good feeling,” says Bierback, who along with wife Glenda, has for 18 years owned and operated the local National Transmission shop. “We have good customer relations all around the whole city.”

Bierback says the focus has always been on good treatment of the customer, and building trusting

relationships that last.

“We don’t ever like to leave any bad feelings about anything, so we’ve always tried to co-operate with the public,” Bierback says, adding that customer service is priority No. 1. “We seem to have kept a pretty good rapport with our customers.”

That attitude has seemingly helped the business through economic times of both good and bad. Being specific to transmissions, Bierback says he and other specialty mechanic shops in town can share business, promoting each other’s various expertise.

That community-minded strategy comes easy to both Darrell and Glenda, as they know no other city like Medicine Hat.

“I’m a hometown boy, born and raised here,” Bierback says. “I apprenticed here and never left.”

Glenda is also a native Hatter, so between lifelong residency and two decades in business, it’s safe to say the Bierbacks know their community well.

“You sure do get to know a lot of people around town,” Bierback says. “It’s not often I can go across town or into Walmart without stopping and talking to somebody.”

Staying so eagerly well known and part of the community for so long is easier when you’re successful, but even that couldn’t sustain a good business for long without both a love for the job and the ability to do it well.

“We’re just a mom and pop operation, and we seem to have a good time,” Bierback says. “I have two employees here at the shop, and between the three of us, we have close to 80 years experience.
