Putting a premium on quality and service puts Microdyne at the top

You shouldn’t need to be a rocket scientist to have a working computer, says Dan Dueck, but if you have the want or need for a virtual rocketship of a computer, he can help out with that, too.
Dueck, who for 15 years has operated Microdyne Computer Systems, is again on top of voting in this year’s Best of Medicine Hat consumers poll.
“The first thing a lot of people say is ‘I don’t know the first thing about computers,’” said Dueck. “Well, I say, you don’t have to.”
He credits his success to understanding customer’s needs — knowing whether they want the long or short version of what’s ailing their system — as well as his ability to hookup more tech-savvy customers with the speed that they need.
“We do custom, higher-end builds,” said Dueck. “But

what sets us apart is that if the client wants, we’ll take them over the (whole process).”
About 80 per cent of problems are created by owners who, with the best of intentions, may download inappropriate applications, or install them incorrectly, said Dueck.
“If we’ve done data migration (a storage move), we’ll make sure they can find everything.”
The company also keeps meticulous records and will take the more holistic approach, checking back to figure out how to best deal with recurring problems.
It’s kept customers coming back for 14 years and, for the third straight year, placed him high in the Best of Medicine Hat voting.
For 2018, Microdyne is the top computer store as well as top specialty retailer, marking the second time in three year’s Microdyne has take top honours.

For his firm to compete with large retailers and online ordering has been a challenge, says Dueck, but concentrating on individual clients needs, and putting a premium on high-quality merchandise and service gives him an edge.
The basic maintenance is getting equipment back to the customer in working order as soon as possible without an explanation that will lease heads spinning.
He also builds custom units for those who put a premium on speed (i.e. gamers), and orders specialized parts and products for the tech-savvy do-it-yourself crowd.
Basically, Dueck enjoys providing advice or talking about industry trends.
“It really sets us apart,” said Dueck.
Microdyne is now operating in a new location at No. 4, 116 Broadway Ave. East in Redcliff.
