Robbenhaar Law's success keep the firm at the top

MEDICINE HAT NEWS

Five years ago, Robert Robbenhaar left behind his role as a Crown prosecutor and started on a new path with the goal of helping the people of Medicine Hat who need it most.

In the time since, Robbenhaar Law has established itself as the best criminal defence firm Medicine Hat has to offer, and Robbenhaar says it all comes down to how you treat people.

“I think if you do a professional and courteous job for someone and you treat them with respect and do good work for them, they’ll tell their friends. Unfortunately often people are in a time of their life where they’re charged with a DUI or a domestic violence situation or a child who is charged with shoplifting and they want someone who can help steer them through this criminal justice system,” said Robbenhaar. “It’s very

rewarding. You’re typically helping people who are usually outstanding, solid citizens who have just made a bad decision and you’re helping them steer clear of consequences, or if there’s a bad outcome for them we’ll help them deal with it the best that we can.”

Robbenhaar added he was shown those key values of courtesy and respect when well-known local defence lawyer Randy Pick — who was moving into a position with the Medicine Hat Police Service while Robbenhaar Law was starting up — gave Robbenhaar his phone number to use.

“At the time a phone number was very important because phone books were very much used five years ago,” he said. “That gave me a source of people to get my name out there and get people to know who I am. Also Randy gave me some of his clients as he was leaving so it just helped me set up practice.

“We’ve just been busy from that day forward. We’ve been very successful, we’ve been very blessed.”

Robbenhaar added he has a very successful track record when it comes to drafting and advancing charter arguments, and as a result many of his cases avoid trial altogether.

“The Crown always needs a reasonable likelihood of conviction to pursue the matter, or alternately sometimes it matters how the public interest is perceived,” said Robbenhaar. “We’ll tend to talk to the Crown about those two facets of it, and usually try to convince them that it’s not in their interest to pursue this matter and often we’re successful with that. Often without even having a trial, charges are withdrawn and our clients are obviously acquitted.”
