It's a dog's world on top

MEDICINE HAT NEWS Who’s a good dog club! Yes, you are! Yes, you are!

The Gas City Dog Club is the Best in Medicine Hat according to Hatters who voted in this year’s consumer choice contest.

Club instructor Sterling Hinch says as the club enters its 39th year of existence, the basics of what it provides to canines and their human companions hasn’t changed much.

Building a relationship with the owner so they can build their own relationship of trust with their animal is the key, he said.

“We’re a recreational club, not a regimented club like some others,” said Hinch.

“We teach with TLC and we’ve been going since 1979, and in all that time I’ve only had one bad review from a person.”

“We teach people how to train their dogs, so it becomes an ongoing thing. And, well, we’re friendly.”

The club offers a range of classes, from puppy kindergarten, general obedience, rally agility and drop-in socialization.

The outfit also recently moved to facility near 821 Industrial Avenue, and now features 2,000-square-feet of space — double the amount of room at its former location in a storefront on North Railway Street.

That allows more room for individual one-on-one work between dog and owner without distraction.

The club offers obedience class for specific sized breeds (i.e. small and large), different levels of agility, mostly through the winter clubs, when dogs seem to require activity and owners can stem cabin fever while staying warm.

Drop-ins continue on Sunday and Monday through the summer, but consult the website (www. gascitydogclub.ca) and first-timers should call ahead, said Hinch.

One facet of dog ownership that has changed over the years, he adds, is that people are more in tune with their animals and are becoming more conscious of engaging their dogs mental needs as well as physical, needs.

That leads to stronger interaction, and eventually a better relationship, and better behaved dogs. That’s a good thing, said Hinch.

“It all helps the dog bond, and it becomes a real family pet,” he said.
