Star Pupils of the Month

088 EDUCATION Kart crazy!

Talented students at West Kent College are “turning a dream into reality” by creating 50 soapbox karts for the Crazy Jean’s charity races coming to Tunbridge Wells in May. Pupils in the motor vehicle department

are using their expertise to build the karts from their Hadlow workshop for the businesses going head-to-head at the exhilarating family fun day in Dunorlan Park. The all-student team is making the basic karts, which include chassis, steering wheel, brakes and tyres, to be then delivered to race competitors to be ‘pimped up’ in time for the races.

A handful of the 16 to 18-year-olds will

also be on hand as a mobile maintenance team on Saturday 5th May to ensure all the karts are race ready – as well as racing their own. Organiser Garry Jeffery said: “We are supplying the materials to West Kent College and thanks to the staff and students the 50 karts will be ready soon for those taking part in the races – and they really are brilliant. “Crazy Jean’s really is a fantastic community event with schools, businesses and organisations really pulling together and using their resources in whichever way they can turning a dream into a reality.” The two local chosen charities benefi tting

from the charity kart race are Hospice In The Weald and children’s hospice ellenor. • Visit www.crazyjeansevents.com

Freya & Cicely – Cranbrook School

There are two Star Pupils this month, chosen by Cranbrook School for their sporting prowess: Freya Black, 16, is aspiring to become an Olympic sailor. She started sailing when she was nine and won her fi rst championship in the Optimist Class at the age of 10. Since then she has become Ladies British, European and World Champion in the RS Feva class. After achieving this success, Freya moved into the 29er Class, which is the youth version of the boat that sailed at the Olympics.

Last year, she came second female at both the RYA Youth Nationals and 29er UK Nationals, while most recently, she has been selected for the RYA Youth National Squad (top eight boats in GBR) and showed her talent in Barcelona this February, where she came second overall and fi rst Ladies at the fi rst Euroup series. Alongside her sailing commitments,

Freya has played at 1st hockey team level this year, is netball captain this season and is recognised by all for her total commitment to excellence. Cicely Freeman has impressed her

teachers through her determination to compete in triathlons and cross-country running. Cicely explains: “The triathlon club has been of huge benefi t to me. It has helped me grow in confi dence completely and I have increased my fi tness hugely. I set myself a challenge to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October

last year and fi nished in 2hrs 7mins and raised more than £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Setting this goal allowed me to train and work around my

A-levels and I enjoyed every minute of it and if it weren’t for the tri club I never would have thought of signing up! “Being able to have the mental attitude of running that far motivated me to run at the Kent Schools in Dover in mid January where I qualifi ed to represent the Kent team and, as a result, ran with them in Berkshire in early February. Lastly it has helped me combat stress with studies whilst encouraging my close friends to join as well as a number of Year 9, 10 and 11 students.”
