EDUCATION 087
Local schools achieve high rankings
For the second time in 10 years, Sevenoaks School has been named ‘Independent Secondary School of the Year’. The award is based on academic success, co-curricular activities, parent feedback, volunteering opportunities and the success of former pupils. Head teacher Dr Katy Ricks declared that the ‘pioneering’ school’s success was down to everyone’s hard work, adding: “Community spirit and philanthropy are at the heart of the school where voluntary service has been part of the students’ education since 1960, and still is a core part of our education offer.”
Sevenoaks School jumped up the UK independent secondary school rankings by nine places to become the eighth best in the UK, and the fourth best in the South East. Meanwhile, Tonbridge Grammar School reached second place in league tables, moving it to ninth position in the national rankings. Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar fared very well, as did Bennett Memorial Diocesan School, while the Judd School in Tonbridge came 13th, Dartford Grammar School was 16th and Rochester Grammar School ranked 43rd. Forgetting the rankings, according to Tatler Magazine, Hillview School for Girls in Tonbridge is one of the best state secondary schools. The pupils are described as ‘sparky and confi dent’ and the impressive Sixth Form facilities, which were partially designed by the girls, are said to be ‘super-stylish’. It is said that ‘most pupils swish off to their fi rst choice of university’. The same publication also rates The Skinners’ Kent Academy highly as ‘one to watch’.
Award-winning Hadlow College RHS student
A student of Hadlow College near Tonbridge has recently won the inaugural Professional Gardeners’ Trust (PGT) Best Report Award for her account of the RHS Level 2 course at the college. Violet Gibbs (left) described the transformative effect of completing her RHS course at Hadlow College, which encompassed the principles of plant growth, propagation and development. The award, run in
association with Horticulture Week, acknowledges the best reports written by recipients of a PGT educational grant. Violet, 25, who is a
grounds maintenance operative, received an educational grant of £440 towards the £550 costs of her RHS course, from charity PGT and its funder Lironi, and she secured a permanent job at the end of her apprenticeship.
Endless opportunities
From our youngest to our most senior pupils, the aim is the same – to offer a broad and balanced education with a range of stimulating opportunities that allow the children to gain exciting experiences, seeking to ignite a passion for knowledge, understanding and learning in the widest sense. To enjoy time with their friends and make new ones, to develop the confi dence to branch out, to learn new skills, unearth untapped talents and, importantly, to have fun while doing so. Happy and engaged children, both inside and outside the classroom, is what a great school is all about. • Contact Holmewood House School, Langton Green, Tunbridge Wells TN3 OEB, call 01892 860000 or visit
