plans. But how much revision is too much, or is there no such thing?
I
Did you know that something called ‘test anxiety’ does exist and that it can severely hinder the revision process for many students of all ages. It is said to affect up to 40% of students who are likely to suffer some degree of under-achievement if they can’t fi nd an effective revision method. Here some top tips for revising this Easter: • Make a revision timetable – and stick to it! • Revise little and often rather than cramming for hours at a time. • Speak out loud. You will listen to your own voice and understand more clearly. • Making fl ash cards, mind maps, songs or voice recordings works very well for many people.
• It has been shown that highlighting too many key points is not a highly effective method of revision. • Test yourself and use past exam papers as much as possible.
• Ask other people to test you on your knowledge. • Revise in different places. Studies show
t’s a key time of year for pupils taking exams in May. In fact the Easter break won’t seem like a holiday at all for many young students who will be putting revision at the top of their holiday
that working in varied venues helps the memory to re-learn which makes memory recall easier.
• Aim to leave the gap between your revision sessions in one subject at a length which is around 15% of the total time you need to retain the information.
Where to go for help?
www.schoolexams.
co.uk teams up with top teachers and the main exam boards to provide past exam papers online, with the answers fully explained, which allows students to work through at a pace that suits them. There is also a website called www.
tassomai.com, which calls itself an ‘intelligent learning program’. It is said to be particularly useful for help with science and it claims to help students to achieve outstanding results. There are a number of residential and day course opportunities offering high quality revision, including Aim for ‘A’ which is held at Tonbridge School. There are three April sessions commencing 3rd, 7th and 11th of the month. For more information, or to book, visit
