PARENTING 083 Building bricks standing the test of time!

This years marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic LEGO® brick. The Lego Group began producing a plastic brick in 1949, but it was not until nine years later, in 1958, that the brick we know today was born. The simple idea of adding tubes inside a plastic brick turned into one of the most exciting and influential toys in the world and since then, Lego play has been about the joy of building and giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play. Lego play appeals to all generations and remains as fun and relevant today as it was in

1958, inspiring generations of builders, creators and dreamers through the power of play. Meanwhile, over at the LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, a digital aquarium, LEGO® Reef, joins the line-up of new attractions for 2018. Families can dive deep under the sea and build colourful sea creatures out of virtual Lego bricks using touch screen technology. Bursting with interactive fun, guests can create their very own virtual Lego fi sh using touchscreens, before casting them off into the ocean and watching them swim through the interactive fl oor-to-ceiling coral reef. • Visit www.legoland.co.uk

Testing times tables

Ahead of the introduction of new mandatory times tables testing of pupils aged eight and nine, KeyStageFun’s chart-topping app, Times Tables, part of the popular Squeebles app suite, designed by Tunbridge Wells parents Ian

and Florence Knapp, helps make screen time a positive part of family life. The fi ve-minute online multiplication test, to be taken by children in Year 4, will be trialled by more than 7,000 pupils in 290 UK primary schools this spring before being rolled out nationally over the next two years.

The national curriculum specifi es that by this stage pupils should be able to recall the multiplication tables up to and including 12 x 12. Squeebles Times Tables is a fun way for children to learn and practise tables, as they help rescue all 40 Squeebles from the Maths Monster as a reward for their hard work. It is available on android, Mac OSX, iPad/ iPhone and Kindle Fire, priced £2.99. • For more information, visit www. keystagefun.co.uk
