034 FOOD & DRINK Gin & It!

Shipbourne’s Greensand Ridge Distillery, launched in 2015 by Sevenoaks-born entrepreneur Will Edge, has been awarded a Master medal in The Distillery Masters, run by the The Spirits Business, for their work on sustainability. Awards include bronze, silver and gold medals, with the Master designation being reserved for entrants which show exceptional innovation and quality, well beyond peers. “Judges were blown away by the extra mile Master

medallist Greensand Ridge Distillery went to, to boast heightened green credentials. The distillery uses 100% renewable power, is using innovative means to target zero- waste, use no plastic or chemicals, and creates products using damaged or surplus local crops, among other things.” Founder Will hopes the distilling industry will be quick to adopt more sustainable practices. “Much of what we do would be easy for many distilleries to implement, it just takes a mindset shift to get there.” • Visit www.greensanddistillery.com

£1m refurbishment for Kings Hill pub

Work is underway on a £1 million refurbishment of The Spitfi re in Kings Hill, West Malling.

The contemporary Shepherd Neame pub was built in 1999 on a former Battle of Britain RAF base, and that heroic history was the inspiration for its name, which is shared by the brewery’s signature range of Spitfi re Kentish Ale, Spitfi re Gold and Spitfi re Lager. It has also infl uenced the plans for

the pub’s new signage, which will involve painting the profi le of a Spitfi re on the

exterior of the building, and adding a swing sign featuring the aircraft. Nigel Bunting, Director of Retail and

Tenanted Operations, said: “This year marks the 100th anniversary of the RAF, so we seem to have chosen a fi tting time to reinvigorate this popular pub.” • The Spitfi re is expected to reopen at the end of April.
